ABA International Hosts “Lawyers without Rights”

The 2010 Spring Meeting of the ABA International Law Committee will be held April 13-17 at the Grand Hyatt New York.

The meeting will feature the exhibition, “Lawyers Without Rights,” created by the German Federal Bar and made available for the first time in the United States. The exhibit features detailed and poignant accounts of the lives and fates of Jewish lawyers throughout Germany who suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime.

On April 14, the “Managing Partner Summit” will bring together leaders from 20 law firms from around the world to discuss shifting paradigms in the legal profession caused by the global economic crisis.

On April 16, experts from academia, and the private and the public sectors, including SEC Commissioner Luis A. Aguilar and Thomas C. Baxter, general counsel at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will present. Speakers and panelists are sourced from  Google Inc., the UN Development Program, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, General Electric Co., Columbia Law School, the World Bank, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Federal Trade Commission, Georgetown University Law Center, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Department of Justice and the Department of State.

Internationally renowned legal experts will be speaking, including Harold Hongju Koh, legal adviser to the Department of State and former dean of Yale Law School. Koh has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and testified before Congress. He has authored or co-authored eight books and more than 150 articles on international and national security, international business transactions, foreign affairs and human rights. Ambassador Abdullah H. Haroon, permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, will be speaking about the UN’s newest Call to Action. Martin Lipton, business law leader and creator of the “poison pill” defense, which was created in response to tender-based hostile takeovers will also be featured.
